NHRY Independent Wheel Truing Facility

New Haven, CT

This project is for the construction of a new Independent Wheel Truing Facility (WT) located in the middle of the Northeast's largest and busiest railyard. This project constructed a single-floor shop, housing a dual-wheel tandem-axel wheel truing machine and support facilities, including associated tracks and switches leading to the new building and connecting to the existing track network.

The project also included adding new catenary systems, sanitary sewers, drainage systems, telecommunications systems, electrical systems, construction of railroad subgrade, placing of ballast, ties and tracks, mechanical systems and modification to existing systems to accommodate the new facility. One of the difficulties with this project was the unknown subsurface conditions, which required exploratory excavation prior to the installation of the work. Existing soil conditions required 24 hour dewatering of contaminated groundwater distributed to a temporary treatment facility for processing and eventual discharge. The new building foundation is supported by precast concrete piles.
