Public Works Awareness Day Fascinates Children
The city of Danbury arranges the event in conjunction with National Public Works Week, put on by the American Public Works Association. This year’s “The Power of Public Works” theme for the 2018 National Public Works Week was evident yesterday, as children from several schools visited the Danbury Public Works complex on Newtown Road. Oohs and ahhs filled the air as they visited areas set up to educate them on the various departments that make Public Works, well, work.
Rizzo supports this event every year in an effort to increase children’s knowledge of how the world works in ways they may not have thought about and educate them on the intricacies of municipal construction and maintenance. Kids toured the facility, got up close and personal with various maintenance trucks, went on a hayride around the complex (including around the former landfill!), and clambered inside fire trucks from Wooster Hose Co.
Public Works employees also had a fun diversion, as they got to experience life as a kid again; endless questions, wonder at the seemingly giant trucks, and the avid hunger for information permeated the air at the Public Works complex yesterday, and smiles from employees were big as kids walked by.
